International Widows Day 2025: Honouring the Courageous, Amplifying the Forgotten

Every year, June 23rd marks a powerful global observance, “International Widows Day”, a day dedicated by the United Nations, to recognising and addressing the unique challenges faced by millions of widows around the world. It’s more than a calendar date; it’s a call to action, a moment of remembrance and a celebration of courage.

Spotlight on African Widows

In many African countries, widowhood carries layers of stigma and suffering. From harmful traditional practices to legal disenfranchisement, African widows are often left to navigate grief, shame and survival alone.

African Wonder Women Organisation CIC: A Voice for the Forgotten

African Wonder Women Organisation CIC believes that “Every Emotion Is Valid™”, and every woman deserves emotional support, dignity and empowerment, regardless of her status.

Through:

  • Community healing Events And Workshops
  • The “Every Emotion Is Valid™” Seminars
  • The “Every Emotion Is Valid™” Annual Conventions
  • Safe spaces to “Speak the Unspeakable Through Creativity” and “Unwind Sip ‘N’ Create
  • Peer support and empowerment programmes

Work Still To Be Done

While progress has been made, much remains:

  • Laws need to change to protect widows’ rights across Africa.
  • Mental health services must be more accessible.
  • Stigmas must be challenged in homes, communities and cultures.
  • Funding must be increased for grassroots organisations supporting widows’ recovery and empowerment.
