Every year on June 23rd, we observe International Widows Day—a day designated by the United Nations to shed light on the challenges faced by widows worldwide. It’s a day to raise awareness about the human rights violations many widows endure after losing their spouses.
At the heart of this commemoration is the African Wonder Women Organisation CIC, a non-profit organisation based in the United Kingdom dedicated to supporting widows, the bereaved, and the oppressed, especially women and young girls. Our mission resonates deeply with the experiences of widows who often find themselves in sudden financial distress, emotional turmoil and mental challenges following their loss.
Losing a spouse is emotionally crippling, but for many African widows, it’s compounded by legal and cultural barriers. Traditional practices like property seizure and forced remarriage leave them vulnerable. Financial independence can be a distant dream due to lack of education, job discrimination, and social stigma.

3.Create a Will: Ensure your wishes are legally documented.
4.Life Insurance: Provide financial security for your family.
5.Funeral Planning: Ease the burden by preparing in advance.
6.Update Records: Inform beneficiaries and trustees. Include your wife and children in business records.
7.Encourage Financial Independence: Support your spouse in earning her own income.
8.Seek Financial Advice: Plan for the future today.
