Welcome To African Wonder Women Organisation CIC

Introduction

Becoming a widow is never planned but we all know a friend, sister, aunt, or mother who lost a spouse. We can recall how, as African Widows, they, and their children, were treated and particularly how they were negatively impacted by the loss.

Background

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 5, 8, 9, 10 & 11) advocates for social justice, gender equality and greater financial independence for women. The level of injustice is particularly critical for African women who are widows and we aim to begin to challenge this inequality.

African Culture and Traditions and its exploitation of widows during such a difficult period as loss are echoed by several families, women and widows across Africa and the rest of the world.

Research findings on the treatment of widows in Africa are alarming and there are discriminatory cultural practices that require challenge, education, and enlightenment.

About Us

African Wonder Women Organisation CIC (AWWOrgcIC) is a non-profit initiative operating in the United Kingdom to support widows and their children. Currently, we rely on donations which we invest in our beneficiaries to empower them and support their communities. We aim to also support our operations through the sale of African inspired merchandise produced by our indigenous artisans. We are managed by a dedicated team of volunteers. We recognise the health, social and financial benefits to the community of effective practical support, counselling, and therapy after bereavement and aim to signpost beneficiaries to nationally recognised organisations for support.
